Welcome to The Animal Hostel - Ideal for animal lovers and solo travellers, we offer you a perfect spot to explore the countryside, make friends, relax and feel at home.
We are a social hostel, recommended for travellers 18 - 40 years, located in Nottinghamshire.
Set in the grounds of a Georgian manor house built in the 1700s, offering a cosy social lounge, fully equipped kitchen, outdoor balcony, co-working space and indoor dining area.
On-site we have approximately 20 rescued animals to include cows, sheep, cats, dogs and (a lot of) horses. All our animals require a lot of care and attention and if you would like to help us with this we have daily activities such as grooming the cows and horses, walking the dogs, and keeping the paddocks clean. We also love for our guests to just spend time with them and give them cuddles and company.
Please note our dogs and cats are frequently inside the hostel.
We also have a wider range of group activities such as movie nights, pub walks (with animals in tow!), family dinners, day trips etc but these are subject to demand.
The village of Thurgarton is well connected via public transport and can be accessed by bus or train.
The 26 bus departs from Stop V4 outside Victoria centre in Nottingham and takes approximately 35 minutes.
Alternatively the train to Thurgarton runs from both Nottingham station and Newark Castle, taking approximately 20 minutes, followed by a 10 minute walk.
PAYMENT IS ACCEPTED BY CASH ON ARRIVAL - please bring cash with you as there aren’t many cashpoints in the countryside!
• Please ensure your arrival time is between 8AM - 11 PM. Alternatively please let us know if you will be arriving outside these hours.
• Check in to rooms is from 12 NOON- 11 PM
• Check out before 12 NOON
We have a bunch of free stuff for you:
• FREE self catering vegetarian breakfast
• FREE coffee, Tea & sugar
• FREE towels and hairdryer to borrow
• FREE games and books
• FREE use of washing machine and dryer

• Pets are NOT allowed unless pre approved by us.

This was one of the loveliest and most thoughtfully furnished hostels I’ve ever stayed at – it’s a dream come true! Super cosy rooms heated 24/7 in the winter, comfy beds. Gorgeous living area with sofas that you never want to get up from, a well equipped kitchen with free pasta, rice and porridge you can cook when you want. But best of all you’re surrounded by RESCUED ANIMALS – just imagine waking up and brushing cows, petting mini horses, walking through the countryside. EVERYONE SHOULD GO!!

I didn’t really know what to make of the Animal Hostel when I booked a night in November 2024 since it was brand new and there were no reviews yet. After spending the night, I can say confidently that the place is as advertised. The location was easily accessible, the scenery was beautiful and the location was super clean. The animals were friendly and it was super enjoyable spending time with them. I highly recommend this place and will definitely be returning in the near future.
